Welcome to another Q&A session where we answer questions from homeowners around Maple Valley and King County.
Today's question is:
The owner explains that his first question to every homeowner is what's inspiring the change, since the right recommendation depends heavily on whether someone plans to stay in their home long-term or sell soon. For long-term homeowners, he consistently recommends composite decking, and specifically TimberTech, which he's recommended for at least the last ten years because he considers it the best product for Washington's climate. He breaks TimberTech down into two main lines: standard TimberTech composite decking and AZEK, which is 100% PVC. AZEK carries the same benefits as standard TimberTech but is also fully heat resistant, making it a strong option for decks that get heavy sun exposure or docks near water where sunlight reflects intensely. Overall, the material recommendation always depends on the homeowner's specific goals and timeline rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.
That's a great question. The most important thing, and the first question I ask every single homeowner, is what's inspiring the change. What I'm going to recommend to a homeowner isn't a cut-and-paste answer I give to everyone. If you plan to live in your home for the rest of your life versus planning to sell it in the next year, I'm going to recommend two totally different things. So the first step is understanding what's inspiring the change, why they want it, and what they're hoping to accomplish. From there, I can help point them toward the best options or best products. Typically, if somebody's looking for a long-term option they can enjoy for a long time, we're always going to recommend a composite deck, and I've been recommending TimberTech for at least the last ten years. I recommend TimberTech simply because it's the best product in Washington and for Washington's climate. TimberTech really has two main options: their standard composite decking line, and AZEK, which is 100% PVC. In the majority of decks, unless somebody's looking for a super short-term or extremely cheap option, I'm going to recommend composite, and I'm always going to recommend TimberTech. The additional benefit of AZEK, on top of all the normal TimberTech benefits, is that it's also 100% heat resistant. It's a really good product for people who have, say, a deck that gets blasted with sun all day, or a dock on the water where the water reflects the sun and adds even more heat. It's a little more expensive and it carries a longer warranty, but for the right situation, that heat resistance makes a real difference.
