Welcome to another Q&A session where we answer questions from you all on the internet.
Today's question is:
The owner explains that recommendations here depend heavily on the homeowner's specific wants and needs, since everything Euro Decks builds is custom, leaving little room for a cookie-cutter approach. Key questions include how much coverage they want, whether the structure should be a central feature or a smaller accent, and whether privacy or simply staying dry is the priority. For anything intended as a long-term, central piece, he strongly recommends custom-built structures over prefabricated options, noting that inexpensive prefab products, like a well-known big-box store gazebo, tend to fall apart within a year or two and end up being thrown away. If someone just wants something simple to pull out occasionally when it rains and isn't concerned with aesthetics, a prefab or automated cover can be a reasonable choice. Overall, his guidance centers on matching the structure type to how central and long-lasting the homeowner needs it to be.
That's a good question. I'm pretty much always going to base a huge part of what I recommend on the homeowner's specific wants and needs. Everything we do is custom, and when you're doing something custom on somebody's home, there's very little you can do with a cookie-cutter approach. It really depends on how much they want covered, how overbearing they want the structure to be, whether they want it to be an accent to the deck or a central piece of their outdoor living space. I'm going to recommend two totally different structures and shapes based on those answers. It also depends on whether they want it to add privacy or if it's purely to keep them dry when it's raining. So it really does depend on the homeowner, their wants, and their needs. That said, there are a couple of things I typically lean into. If someone is doing something that's more of a central piece, I really do recommend having something custom-built rather than prefab. Prefab products are typically cheaper, short-term options, and you're not going to find any prefab product for five thousand dollars or less that gives you a real long-term result. Those options tend to last a year or two before they become an eyesore. If you want a long-term, everyday option, I recommend having something custom-built, which we can do with custom patio covers. If you're looking for something simple, sometimes a prefab option is the best fit, especially if you just want to pull it out when it's raining and don't care much about the aesthetics or whether it's a main feature of the space. In that case, spending a bit to install an automated cover is a great option. But if you want something that's more of a long-term, everyday feature, custom-built is the way to go rather than something prefabricated, like the well-known big-box store gazebos, which we've thrown away more of than I can count after they turn into a rusty clump of metal sitting on the deck.
